4 Tips for Mosquito and Tick Prevention in Pets

With this summer showing no signs of slowing down, it’s important to keep your dogs and cats safe from harmful pests.

1- Use a safe, effective insect repellent. Steer clear of volatile synthetic chemicals, as these residues linger in your home. Instead, opt for a plant-based spray and re-apply according to the product instructions.

2- Check your pet for ticks. If you live in an area susceptible to ticks or walk through hiking trails, aim to look over your pet after time spent outside. If you find a tick on your pet, inform your vet immediately and track any changes in your pet’s behavior.

3- Schedule an annual heartworm test with your veterinarian. While flea and tick bites may be more obvious, mosquitoes can transmit a deadly heartworm to your pet, especially in the warmer months. Regular screenings can prevent issues like heart failure.

4- Maintain any outdoor areas. The CDC recommends removing leaf litter, tall grasses, and brush from your yard. You can also invest in an outdoor mat or bed, to discourage dogs laying on lawn or vegetal areas.
